A Little Motivational Viewing

This is why we work hard to stay in shape: So we never, ever have to resort to the "comfort wipe" to reach our asses.

Soup 2 Nuts 4 Soup: Tuscan Pumpkin Curry White Bean Soup

I officially declare the winter of 2008-2009 The Winter of Soup!

I implore all you canned soup addicts to put the Progresso down! The only progress you'll make with canned soups is shooting a sodium rocketship straight into your blood pressure!

Soup is insanely easy to make (and easy to sneak in all those yummy veggies you should be eating!), can feed you for weeks, and even has its own song and tribute video on YouTube:

You can't argue with the powers of YouTube!

To kick off The Winter of Soup, I tried out a soup recipe from Weight Watchers.com called Tuscan Pumpkin-White Bean soup.

All it takes is 1 can of pumpkin, 1 can of white beans, chicken broth, and 1 medium onion. You cook the onion covered until cooked through, toss in 3 cups of the broth and the can of the pumpkin and the can of the white beans. Simmer for 8 minutes and then break out your blender to creamify it. Or if you're a cool kid like me, you break out your Oster pocket rocket and blend it right in the pot.

Because I can't eat things that are curry-colored without them also tasting of curry, I added some curry powder and some lemon juice to kick it up a bit. From start to finish, this probably took me about 15 minutes, most of which I spent talking on the phone.

And this is the party that resulted:

You know it's a tastebud party when the glitter lava lamp shows up!

As a special bonus for getting through this post, I now present you with another reason to eat your vegetables...

I think there's some truthiness behind Stephen Colbert's assertion that baby carrots will make you gay.

Talk About Wearing Your (Poor) Diet on Your Sleeve...

If part of your healthy diet campaign includes a battle with your painful bacon addiction, this sexy bacon suit inner-thigh shot should help get your upchuck-reflexes chunking...

It even smells like bacon!

"Each Tuxedo is tailored from chemically treated latex print fabric in one of four different sizes. Best of all, it smells just like bacon sizzling in the pan. Dry clean only."

Full disclosure: I partook in consuming bacon this morning. With appropriate restraint and accompanying exercise, bacon can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Also, this dude kinda turns me on.

Ps. Be sure to ask Jer about his bacon story... mwhaha...

You eat too much!

I bet you eat too much. I know I do.

This awesome quiz on prevention.com gives a really good quiz on serving sizes by asking you how much you should eat relative to the size of real-world objects. It's very educational (did you know that the proper size of a serving of meat is a deck of cards, and the proper serving of rice is a half-tennis ball?). If you can get these right, then you're probably just reading this site to be supportive!

Trying to Tune up your Treadmill Time? Turn up the Tunes!

Looking for some inspiration or help in improving your workouts? A recent study at Brunel University quantifies what we already suspected from experience: the right music really helps you work out.

In their study, they found that by picking the right music (faster beats, motivational lyrics), exercisers were able to increase their endurance by an average of 15%!

Goal Achievement Alert! Goal Achievement Alert!

What do these images have in common with what I'm about to do to my running a 5K goal...?

Oh, that's right boys and girls... I'm about to SHRED IT!

I'm joining forces with Team Hustle Muscle to run the Samaritan's 5k Run on October 4th.

Samaritans, Inc is the only suicide prevention organization in the greater Boston and MetroWest areas, operating around the clock to help alleviate the isolation and emotional despair that can lead to suicide.

It's a totally worthy cause and I'm thrilled to make this my very first (and definitely not last!) 5K run!

You can check out my personal fundraising page to learn more about this run and how you can contribute to help a good cause! (There's also some of my famous MS Paint artwork on display.)

What fruit are you shaped like?

While it's commonly accepted that any nutritionally sound diet with appropriate limits is better than an eating free-for-all, this may help some of us plan better guidelines

According to a study performed by Children's Hospital in Boston, you can make a more educated diet choice just by looking in the mirror!

Fitness.com has a good write-up of the study.

In general, what they found is that different people have different levels of insulin secretion, and your personal level of insulin secretion tends to dictate both how you digest food (and thus which particularly diet will be most helpful for you), as well as where your body will store excess fat.

In English:
If you tend to store body fat around your waist, you probably have a lot of insulin kicking around. This would mean you are very efficient at turning simple sugars into body fat, and that therefor your best diet is probably one that cuts down on simple carbohydrates (things made from refined flour or sugar, etc.)(because they are so easily digested they can be quickly and efficiently converted to fat).

If you tend to store body fat around your hips, you probably have a smaller amount of insulin. This would mean you are not especially efficient at converting simple sugars to fat, so this finding actually doesn't help you very much.
